VimJet™
Brand Identity + UI/UX
A private jet service for generation z.
"Color and type come together to bring this thoughtfully-designed interface to life "
Design Ethos
As a personal challenge, I wanted to see if I could ideate and design a UI and brand identity within 48 hours.
I have recently come to love the design of the HondaJet, a Very-Light Jet manufactured by the Honda Aircraft Company. The jet features a unique design ethos, utilizing a natural-laminar flow to the aerodynamics of the airframe and the noticeable engine over-wing design, which adds additional cargo space to the aircraft. This inspired me to create an identity and user interface for the Gen-Z private jet service. I created the name by combining Vim from a Latin root meaning powerful and the jet. With these elements, I began to develop the design ethos. To appeal to GenZ, capturing the optimal design was imperative, and I chose to go with a modern design with some 90's inspired elements. I settled on a geometric san-serif typeface, Urbanist, which retains a neutral structure, which is ideal for digital settings. To add some contrast, I also selected Anonymous Pro, a monospaced typeface. The grey-blue provides excellent readability in light and dark settings and, combined with the naturally readable neutral grey, creates an effective color palette. For the logomark. I started with a variety of shapes which were inspired by airplanes taking off and landing. After much trial and error, I eventually came up with an angular trapezoid resembling the tail of an airplane, which when combined with the Vimjet logotype, powerfully visualizes the outline of a jet.
The process of designing the User Interface was deliberate. I created a simplified method for booking and managing flights, eventually creating the user experience journey below.
Once I mapped out the user journey, I worked to wireframe the app. As shown above, I drew out screens for each of the major functions and consolidated much smaller processes into multi-functional screens.
With the diagramming done, I set to work creating each of the individual screens for the interface. This was the most time-intensive part of the project, with close to 8 hours of Figma-related work designing the screens and getting the prototype together.
All in all, I enjoyed doing this project. It was a great exercise in ideating and accelerating my design process, and it gave me insights to better understand how I can simplify my design workflow. One change, in particular, is my future use of FigJam as a planning tool. The FigJam process I developed allows me to work on my business knowledge and design process, with a model marketing Initial Customer Profile providing the link between the business and design functions. These lessons will undeniably expand my current abilities as a designer, and I'm excited to implement this framework on my next UI project.
